Family Bible
Book Repair
This Family Bible is from 1890 and it was in really bad condition with water damage, forgotten in a humid shed. My client ask for paper repair, especially the pages with manuscript in the middle of the Bible which were torn out. She asked for a Leather Reback. I cleaned and reshaped the covers, did the paper mending, sewed the torn out signatures back into place onto the old cords, and redid the endpapers. I cleaned and relined the spine, added a hollow, tacketed the boards to the textblock, and did the Leather Reback. To be able to close the bible with the original hardware, I added a fully removable brass extension to it. In the end I glued the original spine back onto the reback. I housed the Bible in a heavy duty double wall box with cradle. The cradle got inspired by the blog of @annieuji and @jeffpeachey. A very special shout out to Annie who answered all my questions! THANK YOU! The cradle will make sure that the Bible stays safe when displayed and handled at family events.
