Book Repair
Author: Louisa M. Alcott
Title: Jo’s Boys
Place of Publication/ Date: The Preface was signed in Concord, July 4,1886
Measurments: 175mm x 130mm x 33mm
The book is a dark green cloth binding with gold and black stamping on the front and the spine. The front board of the cover is completely detached. The Spine and the back board of the cover are detached from the bookblock, but still connected to each other.
The corners of the cover are all bent and weak.
Inside the front cover you see leftovers from a black and white print of the author almost completely torn out.
The textblock was sewn on three recessed cords with a kettle stich on the top and the bottom. It has 24 sections, 4 Folios. The binding became almost completely undone with one cord missing and the other two only connected to the second half of the book.
The paper of the book turned yellow, it shows some losses, some section are torn at the bottom of the spine. The paste down on the cover are in a litghter but matching green/white with a flower and leave pattern. The endpaper is missing. The first page is a picture of a Walter Ricketson Sculp of the Author, handsigned by the Author on a sleak piece of paper, completely detached. There is another loos page in the front of the book, as well detached and smaller then the book. It showes flowers and wines with ribbons through it that says “SCELE DA SCRIT TORI VIVENTI” in the middle of the page you see a circle with a whreath, in side the whreath you see an old oil lamp and the letters A.G. Maybe this page was used as a bookmark or came into the book by accident.
the book needs a clothreback and the corners of the cover have to be stabilized. The bookblock needs to be resewn and a new spine lining. I would like to add endbands and new endpapers. Before I resew I will sponge of the pages, tissue repair the losses on the foredge of the first 16 pages and I will repair the sections which are torn at the spine.
The picture of the auther will be attacht to the endpapers and for the loose leafe page I will make a mylar sleeve, since the paper looks acidic.
I resewed the textblock on 3 Remi bands. I repaired the losses with tissue paper and stabilized the page foredges of the first few pages with tissue paper. I reattached the first page and the last page with V-Hinges.
I reset the spine and lined it. I added Headbands out of green tissue paper to make the book look more proper. After that I did a cloth reback. I repaired all 4 corners with Tissue paper and in the inside I connected the cover with the Textblock with Tissue paper. I decided not to color match the Tissue paper since the color looked so intense…if I would do it again, I would do it anyway. However, that decision was just cosmetic. The book feels stable and functions fine now. I as well covered the torn leftovers of the autors portrait on the inside front cover with Tissue paper to keep it safe. I love how the outside of the book turned out.
